Mick Fitzgerald talk for Áras Uí Chonghaile

Created: October 26, 2021

It was fantastic to have the chance to do this online talk for Áras Uí Chonghaile about Michael Fitzgerald, Cork IRA leader. Fitzgerald is a recurring figure in my forthcoming book on Liam Lynch. Fitzgerald was the first republican to die on hunger striker during the Irish War of Independence in October 1920. His death was eclipsed by that of Terence MacSwiney not long after. At the end of the Irish Civil War, Liam Lynch, the IRA Chief-of-Staff, made a final request to be buried with his late comrade. Both are buried together in Kilkrumper Cemetery in Fermoy, Co. Cork.

(Of note, this year marks the 40th anniversary of the hunger strikes in the H-Blocks in which ten republicans died).
